Introduction

It was a rainy autumn afternoon and Andrade, a promising footballer, sat worriedly in his dentist’s waiting room. A persistent toothache had begun to affect not only his appetite, but also his focus in training. This moment made Andrade realise something he had never considered before: the health of his mouth could have a profound impact not only on his daily well-being, but also on his sporting performance. This revelation was the starting point for a journey of discovery about the crucial importance of dental care for athletes, an area often neglected in the world of sport. “Athlete’s Smile: The Importance of Dental Care in Sports Performance” is more than just a title; it’s an invitation to explore the intrinsic relationship between a healthy smile and athletic excellence.

1. The Connection Between Oral Health and Physical Performance

According to a study by the University of Heidelberg, around 18 per cent of athletes suffer from dental problems that have a direct impact on their sporting performance. Oral inflammation can lead to a decrease of up to 10% in muscle capacity, affecting endurance and strength (Meier, 2019). Dental malocclusion can unbalance an athlete’s posture, negatively impacting sports that require precise balance, such as gymnastics.

2. Common Dental Problems in Athletes

Athletes, especially those in contact sports, are at risk of dental trauma. A study carried out by the Portuguese Sports Medicine Association revealed that 35 per cent of rugby and boxing athletes have already suffered some kind of dental injury. In addition, dental erosion, caused by acidic drinks and energy supplements, affects around 42 per cent of swimmers, impacting on the long-term health of their teeth (Costa, 2022).

3. Psychological Impact of a Healthy Smile in Sport

Dental aesthetics significantly influence athletes’ self-image and confidence. A study by the University of Porto indicated that athletes with poor oral health show 20% less confidence in their sporting abilities compared to those with good oral health (Sousa, 2021). A healthy smile can therefore be a crucial factor in an athlete’s psychological resilience and self-esteem.

4. Prevention and Dental Care Strategies for Athletes

Prevention is key to athletes’ oral health. It is recommended that 90% of athletes in contact sports wear personalised mouthguards to prevent dental injuries (Fernandes, 2020). In addition, rigorous oral hygiene and a balanced diet, reducing the consumption of sugars and acidic drinks, are essential to prevent dental erosion and caries.

5. Innovations and advances in sports dentistry

Sports dentistry is evolving rapidly. Recently, the University of Lisbon developed an intelligent mouthguard capable of monitoring the athlete’s oral health and stress in real time, an innovation that promises to transform dental care in sport (Gomes, 2023).

Conclusion

Andrade’s story is not unique; it reflects the reality of many athletes whose performance is influenced by their oral health. The connection between a healthy smile and success in sport is indisputable. We therefore encourage athletes and sports professionals to prioritise oral health, not only to preserve their smile, but also to optimise their athletic performance. This article highlights the need for a holistic approach to sports preparation, where oral health is just as crucial as physical technique and mental toughness.

With this article, we aim not only to inform, but also to inspire athletes to consider oral health as an essential component of their training and general well-being.
